She's the silent sleeping mother

One we don't look in the eye

She is cold, she is surrender

One day we'll lie inside

I confront her only in dreams

Visions my mind belies

In which I act my final scene

In which I lie me down to die.

It's the unknown place hereafter

That leaves men petrified

Should a life be lived in laughter

Or should desire be cast aside?

To whom will this all matter

When we're carried on the wind

Why should I leave myself in tatters?

Why should I care if I can't win?

In that place will I find peace?

Soft to the touch, light on my feet

Will my love there wait for me?

Will my pain all lift to flee?

If it does, is that still me?

If I end, what did I mean?

Or is she the end of thought and feeling

The cold dark silence of the sea

If she's the thief of minds and egos

I hope her nothing sets me free.

If it ends, is it still mine?

If I'm no more, was I alive?

For now I'll look away with reverence

Not meet her soft, inviting eyes.

I'll scorn all her advances, but I still know

She'll bring me my demise.
